The Decoder Collection - Reward Stickers

The Decoder Collection of reward stickers for positive teacher feedback is a set of individually hand-drawn creative thinking, problem-solving rewards for teachers. They were originally only used digitally in virtual tasks! Now, you have a physical copy of these decoding stickers to use in your learners’ books. Encouraging learners to decode the reward and discover how the teacher valued the quality of the completed task! Unlike a standard "Good" stamp, these stickers require the learner to decipher the visual illustration.

Whether it's figuring out “what kind of star do I think this is?”

Describing the learner as the SUPER STAR  or encouraging them to Dream Big, these stickers

reinforce literacy and problem-solving,

and encourage creative thought.

When a child "works out" the word, the shot of dopamine is doubled; once for the teacher's praise and another time for their own cleverness and pride in solving the puzzle. The inclusion of visuals for learners with language barriers or even those in low-resource settings, the picture interprets the word. This "visual scaffolding" helps children internalise the positive praise even if they struggle with the phonics of the word itself.  Hopefully inspiring their own imagination!

Why Every Learner Needs a "Badge of Honour"

In the journey of education, recognition is not just a "nice-to-have!” It is an effective classroom management tool, and a vital driver of learner success.

From a very early age, we crave affirmation from our parents, teachers and peers.

In fact, our desire for positive reinforcement is so strong during developmental years that a neutral reaction from a teacher can be perceived, by a learner, as negative.

The Power of Personal Recognition

Research distinguishes between "rewards" (extrinsic) and "recognition" (intrinsic). While rewards can provide immediate satisfaction, personal recognition creates a deeper emotional connection to the task.

  • Dopamine & Brain Function: Studies show that levels of dopamine, the "pleasure chemical", rise when we experience recognition. This biochemical response improves attention, memory, and thought retention.

  • Belonging & Identity: Modern pedagogical research suggests that recognition "binds information to identity." When a teacher recognises a learner, it validates their standing in the classroom "practice," making the feedback more effective and enabling better learning.

  • Teacher Wellbeing: Recognition isn't just for students. A culture of recognition in schools alleviates teacher stress and burnout, which in turn creates a more enthusiastic and effective classroom atmosphere.

Evidence for Using Stickers as Rewards

Stickers are one of the most popular forms of "token economies" in schools. Recent studies provide specific evidence for their success:

  • Significant Performance Boosts: A 2024-2025 study (the SPARKS system) found that implementing a sticker-based reward system moved learners from a "Did Not Meet Expectations" level to an "Outstanding" level, with engagement rising from "Very Poor" to "Very Good". (Rulona, Colcol & Baluyos, 2025)

  • Instant & Tangible: Unlike verbal praise, stickers are tangible. For younger learners or those with lower initial motivation, having a physical "Badge of Honor" they can see and touch makes the accomplishment feel more real and significant.

  • Effective Habit Formation: Stickers are highly effective at "jump-starting" a behavior that isn't currently happening. Once the behavior becomes a habit, the sticker rewards can be "faded out" in favor of more intrinsic forms of motivation.

Inspiring Creativity with Alf’s Stickers

To be truly effective, praise must be clear, creative, and varied. This is where the unique work of Alf Mitchley becomes a transformative tool in the classroom. These are not your average "gold stars." Alf's stickers, featuring vibrant, hand-illustrated designs like "Amazing Ideas" (with maize - a mielie), "Focus-ed" (with a magnifying glass), and "Always Aim High" (with a mountain climber), do more than just reward; they inspire.

How Alf’s stickers encourage creative thinking:

  • Interpretation: The intricate, colourful designs invite learners to interpret the meaning behind the art, sparking curiosity.

  • Originality: Alf’s unique range of mediums, from stage sets to digital art, encourages learners to see creativity as a lifelong pursuit.

  • Design Inspiration: These stickers can serve as a "spark" for learners to design their own rewards, fostering a sense of ownership and personal responsibility in their learning journey.

Best Practices for the Classroom

To make the most of reinforcement, remember to:

  1. Be Specific: Tie the praise to a specific accomplishment so the learner knows exactly what they did right.

  2. Be Timely: Immediate reinforcement is the most effective.

  3. Maintain a 4:1 Ratio: Aim for four positive interactions for every one corrective or negative interaction.

  4. Vary the Reward: Use a mix of verbal praise, nonverbal cues (like a thumbs up), and tangibles like Alf's stickers to maintain interest.

Please meet Alf Mitchley, the creator behind these ideas!

Alf Mitchley was an inspirational teacher and educational leader. He always expressed how we should draw the best out of the children we teach and interact with. He taught at schools like The Ridge and St Stithians College in Gauteng, South Africa. Often described as a Design and Technology pioneer in South Africa, his legacy lives on in the numerous textbooks, workbooks and the thousands of teachers who developed a love for, and an understanding of, Design and Technology. His collaboration and sharing of his love of learning, stretched far beyond D&T. Alf, an educational mentor, gifted teacher, admired educator, playwright, artist, cartoonist, scientist, environmentalist, philosopher, and a creative genius. His understanding of the learning process enabled thousands of children (and teachers) to understand how to solve problems through thinking, designing, creating, testing, refining and communicating their solutions.

In a career spanning over 40 years Alf produced over 30 school plays, most of them involving every child in the school and his involvement went from writing, all the way to set design and production. Until his death, Alf was still writing and illustrating educational textbooks, creating animations for digital videos. Diagnosed with cancer in 2020 Alf sadly passed away in February 2022.

Alf’s life was a learning adventure, and his teaching epitomised his love for life. Be inspired by his example!
